Grace Encounter Leadership
The Training Team for each Grace Encounter workshop is made up of several men and women who have been through the workshop, and have practiced its application in their lives for at least one year after graduating from GE. Most of the members of each Training Team have served as a leader multiple times. All Training Team members are committed to and passionate about passing on to others the benefits they’ve experienced through Grace Encounter.
The main leaders in GE are Susan Murray and Bill Smart, two professionals in fields of helping people grow and deal with life’s challenges.
Susan Murray, Ph.D, Licensed Psychologist
Dr. Murray has been offering Christian counseling to individuals, couples, and families in mid-Missouri for close to 20 years. She is sought after as a therapist who integrates biblical values with sound psychology and helps people find practical solutions to difficult life challenges. Some of her specialties include abuse recovery, PTSD, and marital therapy. Dr. Murray is the founder and past Clinical Director of MorningStar Counseling Center in Columbia, Missouri. She currently sees clients at the Women’s Wellness Center in Columbia. She received her counseling psychology training, both at the Master’s and Doctoral levels, at the University of Missouri.
Bill Smart, Th.M., D.Min.
Dr. Smart served as a pastor in three different churches over a twenty-year span, including roles as a senior pastor and adult discipleship pastor. Along with extensive experience teaching and preaching the Bible, one of his special focuses has been on each person’s developmental journey toward full expression of individual uniqueness. He has also led workshops in personality types and interpersonal communication. For the past several years, Dr. Smart has served as a hospice and hospital chaplain in mid-Missouri. He received his Master of Theology degree from Dallas Theological Seminary and his Doctor of Ministry degree from Trinity International University.
Drs. Murray and Smart are committed to counseling and mentoring people, and to offering GE trainees a growth experience founded on biblical principles that wisely uses psychological insights. They believe that each person who attends GE deserves respect as a human being created in the image of God. Along with the Training Team for each Encounter, they are devoted to assisting and equipping individuals in discovering who they were made to be.
